I played half a 2-handed game to learn the rules, and one solo vs AI on the Steam app. Because when the #6 game on BGG is $30, you buy it.

My most recent full game buy was Terraforming Mars when it was $30 on Amazon. It's still a favourite, I just finally painted the minis, can't wait for stupid pandemic to be over so I can play with people. Someone brought it to a university game night, it looked gorgeous, it was great to play, I had to have it for my other game night group. Perhaps it's okay that not hiring anyone is a viable alternative with a different set of risks.įirst game I bought was Cyclades in probably 2010. But you also get so much more versatility in the jobs you can take, the encounters you can handle, the items you can carry, and of course the cannon fodder when you get picked up by enemies. You have to keep them happy by paying them and sometimes by doing the right thing or keeping them safe from Reavers and Alliance. Having deckhands is both a boon and a complication. I can't recall it offering any tips to that effect either. That said, the rulebook doesn't say you need a crew to play well. But I could easily be missing something it's been a year or two since my last play. Unless your friend got very lucky, and their Captain's stats were perfectly suited to the scenario, winning without crew sounds rare. In addition to special abilities, crew provide a huge source of luck mitigation. Personally, I can't imagine flying crewless to be very reliable.
In a game this long, it means that person has to sit out for the rest of the playtime, all because they took an alternative route to victory. The game has no player elimination for a reason. I’m really thinking about a house rule that if a player gets attacked by reavers twice without crew they are eliminated.
